Guyton leads Brazil past New Zealand, Parchment contributes in Canada’s big win

Illinois women’s basketball players stood out on the international stage Wednesday. Aaliyah Guyton helped Brazil earn their first win at the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament, while Cearah Parchment played a part in Canada’s strong victory over the Philippines.

Guyton delivers again for Brazil.

Guyton followed Monday’s 20-point performance with another strong performance in a 56-53 victory over New Zealand.

The Illini guard led Brazil with 18 points, along with four rebounds, four assists, and three steals in over 34 minutes. Guyton made three of her five three-point shots and was Brazil’s top scorer for the second game in a row.

Lety Vasconcelos is also playing for Brazil in the tournament, adding three points and two assists.

The Illini duo hopes to help Brazil move past group play. Brazil faces Argentina on Thursday, a team they have beaten 27 times in 34 games.

Parchment makes an impact in Canada blowout.

Canada had far less trouble earning their second victory of the tournament, cruising past the Philippines 85-38 to improve to 2-0.

Parchment made the most of her nine minutes on the court. After playing only three minutes in Canada’s first win over Senegal, the Illini forward scored nine points, grabbed six rebounds, blocked two shots, and had a steal against the Philippines.

This was a big jump in production for Parchment and gave Canada another key player in a game where they outscored the Philippines by 47 points.

Canada will play host Mexico on Thursday. They have won eight of their nine games against Mexico and hope to stay unbeaten.

Good luck to Guyton, Vasconcelos and Parchment as they continue representing their countries and Illinois basketball on the international stage.
