At just 19 years of age, Yamal has already emerged as one of the best players in the world, making 166 first-team appearances since his debut in 2023.
The teenager has plenty of team accolades to his name, and has already finished in the top 3 of the Ballon d’Or twice, and a former teammate of his has heaped praise on him already, saying he knew he would turn into a huge talent.
‘You could tell he was a special player’
Robert Lewandowski, now playing in Major League Soccer (MLS) alongside Mbekezeli Mbokazi at Chicago Fire, revealed what it was like to see Yamal develop and what their playing dynamic was like.
The two spent four seasons together at Camp Nou, sharing the pitch 127 times.
“I’m two years older than his father, you know? So just imagine: playing with someone who could be my son… It’s crazy,” he remarked.
“Right from the start, you could tell he was a different sort of player, a special player,” the Pole added.
Lewandowski Sends Career Warning
Despite the rave reviews, Lewandowski warned that the teenager will face difficulties in having a lengthy career at the top following his young start.
“I think his biggest challenge will be staying at the top in the long term,” he warned. “If you start so young, it’s much harder to stay at the top when you reach 28, 30, or 32,” he continued.
“Now they start earning money very early on. It’s not like it used to be, when we had to be more patient,” he observed. “Now all you need to do is score a couple of goals, and that’s it. Come on, go ahead, pay up, meet the release clause,” he added.
