El-Sisi reaffirms Egypt’s steadfast support for Libya’s unity in talks with Haftar

CAIRO – 19 August 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast position on Libya, stressing the need to preserve the country’s unity, unify its institutions and hold parliamentary and presidential elections.


El-Sisi made the remarks as he received Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar on Wednesday.


The meeting was attended by Chief of General Staff of the LNA Khaled Haftar, Director General of the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund Belqasim Haftar and Director of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service Hassan Rashad.


El-Sisi also stressed Egypt’s firm support for Libya’s security and stability, as well as initiatives aimed at advancing these goals, the Presidency said in a statement.


He underscored Egypt’s support for achieving security, development and prosperity in Libya and safeguarding its unity and territorial integrity.

The talks also addressed opportunities for joint cooperation between Egypt and Libya to further strengthen their productive partnership.


The LNA commander-in-chief, for his part, expressed his appreciation for visiting Egypt and praised its efforts to support peace, security and stability in the region in general and in Libya in particular.


Haftar affirmed his support for initiatives aimed at achieving security and stability in Libya and preserving its unity.


He also stressed his commitment to continued coordination with Egypt to address shared challenges and advance comprehensive development in Libya.


El-Sisi welcomed Haftar’s visit, underscoring the deep fraternal ties between Egypt and Libya and the importance of strengthening the historic bonds between the two neighboring countries.
