Egyptian Premier League round-up: Al-Ahly, Zamalek impress

The second round of the Egyptian Premier League produced another action-packed week, with Pyramids FC maintaining their perfect start, Al-Ahly making it two wins in a row and Zamalek picking up their first victory of the season.

Pyramids stay perfect

Pyramids made it two wins from two with a 2–0 victory over Abu Qir Fertilizers.

Youssef Obama opened the scoring shortly before half-time, while Jordanian striker Odeh Fakhoury added a second just three minutes into the second half.

The result leaves Pyramids on six points after their first two games.

Al-Ahly makes it two from two

Al-Ahly continued their strong start with a 2–0 win over ZED FC at Cairo International Stadium.

Moroccan left-winger Achraf Bencharki gave Al-Ahly the lead in the 21st minute, with Taher Mohamed adding the second in the 61st minute.

Al-Ahly now has six points and sits second in the table.

El-Geish and Al-Masry also win

Talae El-Geish also recorded their second win of the season, beating Petrojet 3–2 at Suez Stadium.

Karim Tarek and Islam Mohareb put El-Geish two goals ahead before Mohamed Atef made it 3–0 early in the second half.

Petrojet responded with goals from Nigerian striker Godwin Chika and Mostafa El-Badry, but could not find an equaliser.

Al-Masry also moved onto six points after a 3–2 win over Arab Contractors at New Suez Stadium.

Mauritanian winger Idrissa Thiam gave Contractors the lead, but Mahmoud Hamada levelled before half-time.

Hussein Faisal then put Al-Masry in front, only for Omar Kamal to equalise. Mohamed El-Shamy had the final say, scoring the winner in the 83rd minute.

Zamalek gets off the mark

Defending champions Zamalek earned their first win of the campaign with a 3–0 victory over NBE Club at Cairo International Stadium.

Zamalek went ahead early in the second half when Mohamed Nasr put the ball into his own net.

Hossam Ashraf made it 2–0 in the 86th minute, before Ahmed Abdel Rahim ‘Esho’ added a third in stoppage time.

Zamalek now has four points from their opening two matches.

Other results

Ceramica Cleopatra beat Al-Ittihad of Alexandria 3–1. Moroccan forward Ahmed Belhaj, Marwan Osman and Slovenian forward Nejc Gradisar scored for Ceramica, while Hossam Hassan got Al-Ittihad’s only goal.

Wadi Degla also came from behind to beat Enppi 3–1. Tunisian defender Seif Teka gave Degla an early lead before Mahmoud Abdel Moneim ‘Kahraba’ equalised from the penalty spot. Hamza Hassan restored the lead and Ziad Osama added the third.

Canal SC and El-Gouna shared the points in a 1–1 draw. Nigerian forward Mawuli Wayo put Canal ahead before Ahmed Gamal equalised for El-Gouna.

Modern Sport picked up their first win of the season, beating Ghazl El-Mahalla 2–0. Ahmed Mostafa and Mahmoud Mamdouh scored late on.

Smouha and Asyut Petroleum finished the round with a goalless draw at Borg El-Arab Stadium.

After two rounds, Pyramids, Al-Ahly, El-Geish and Al-Masry are all on six points. With the season still in its early stages, the race at the top is already taking shape.
