D’Tigers Face Cameroon in Crucial World Cup Qualifiers

After bouncing back in the last window to keep their World Cup dreams alive, Nigeria’s D’Tigers will begin their campaign in the second round of the 2027 World Cup qualifiers with a clash against group leaders Cameroon on Thursday (today), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Led by coach David Fizdale, Nigeria’s 12-man roster have been fine-tuning their preparations in Tunisia ahead of the showdown at the Radès Salle Multidisciplinaire de Radès.

Heading into the encounter, D’Tigers hold the better head-to-head record, having won three of their last four meetings with Cameroon.

After the clash with Cameroon, D’Tigers will face South Sudan on August 28 and Cape Verde on August 30, with the Nigerians needing a strong finish to remain in contention for one of the World Cup berths.

Nigeria are among the 12 teams that advanced to the second round of the African qualifiers after the first three windows, which were played in November 2025, February 2026 and July 2026.

The teams will carry their results from the first round into the second phase, making every game crucial in the race for places at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.

D’Tigers currently have 10 points after the first three windows, one point behind today’s opponents Cameroon. Guinea, Tunisia and South Sudan also have 10 points, while Cape Verde have nine.

In the second round, each team will face the three teams that advanced from the other group across two additional windows scheduled for August 2026 and February 2027.

After the six additional games, the top two teams in each group, alongside the best third-placed team, will qualify for the World Cup.

The final qualifying window will take place in February 2027, with five African teams set to secure tickets to the World Cup in Qatar.

In addition to keeping their World Cup hopes alive, a strong finish in the African qualifiers could also boost D’Tigers’ chances of competing for a place in the FIBA pre-Olympic qualifying tournament.
