Death toll from ferry disaster in Zimbabwe rises to 80 | 1news.az

The death toll from the August 11 ferry disaster on the Kariba reservoir in Zimbabwe has risen to 80.

As 1news.az reports, this was announced by the Zimbabwean police on X.

Earlier, figures of 72 victims were reported. Another eight bodies were recovered from the water on August 16.

The search and rescue operation at the site of the tragedy is continuing. At the same time, the process of identifying the victims by their relatives is underway.

The total number of people who were on board the sunken vessel has still not been established, since in addition to adults with tickets, children accompanied by their parents were allowed on board without tickets.

The causes of the disaster are being determined. According to preliminary data, the ferry capsized due to strong wind and rough water in an area of the reservoir where the depth exceeds 50 meters.

It was previously reported that more than 160 people could have been on board the ferry. Later, it was announced that 77 people had been rescued.
