Proteas face Zimbabwe in Windhoek final

South Africa enter the decider as the team to beat after topping the round-robin standings with three victories from four matches. Zimbabwe finished second with two wins, while hosts Namibia bowed out after a spirited campaign.

The Proteas have already had the better of Zimbabwe twice during the tournament, but those victories will count for little when the two sides walk out for the final. South Africa won their most recent meeting by 43 runs after posting 185/7, with Lhuan-dré Pretorius leading the charge with an impressive 94. Zimbabwe were eventually bowled out for 142.

Pretorius has since taken his form to another level. The young opener smashed his maiden T20 International century against Namibia on Friday, scoring 101 from just 53 deliveries, while Connor Esterhuizen added a blistering 88 off 40 balls. Their opening stand of 156 helped propel South Africa to 228/4 and underlined the batting firepower available to stand-in captain Bjorn Fortuin.

For Zimbabwe, however, the final represents a chance to erase the disappointment of those two defeats and finish the tournament with a statement victory.

Captain Sikandar Raza and his experienced side have shown plenty of character throughout the competition, particularly in their two victories over Namibia. The Chevrons chased down Namibia’s total in convincing fashion in their most recent outing, winning by five wickets.

Zimbabwe will need their key players to deliver against a South African attack that has grown in confidence as the tournament has progressed. Raza himself remains a crucial figure with both bat and ball, while Brian Bennett and Brad Evans have also made valuable contributions during the series.

The Proteas, meanwhile, will be wary of complacency. Their defeat against Namibia earlier in the tournament proved that T20 cricket can punish even a strong side that takes its foot off the accelerator.

The final also carries added significance beyond the trophy. South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia are all preparing to co-host the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, making this tri-series an important early opportunity to measure themselves against fellow African opposition.

With attacking batters, talented young players and experienced campaigners on both sides, the Windhoek final promises to be a fitting climax to an entertaining tournament.

South Africa may start as favourites, but Zimbabwe have one final opportunity to turn the tables when it matters most.
