Brazil’s Cruise Industry Growth Strategy: Regional Partnerships and New Ships for 2026-2027 – News and Statistics
Aug 24, 2026
Brazil is seeking to expand its cruise market through regional partnerships, as reported by The Maritime Executive. The country’s tourism leaders recently gathered to discuss strategies for growth in South American cruising.
Brazil’s cruise industry has faced challenges due to seasonality, with operators like Costa Cruises having reduced their presence in recent years. Some smaller regional lines have also ceased operations. Gustavo Feliciano, Brazil’s Minister of Tourism, emphasized the need to strengthen circulation between South American countries and increase internationalization by offering a wider distribution of routes to attract global visitors. He spoke at the XI Regional Meeting of Cruises and Nautical-River Tourism conference in Uruguay.
According to CLIA data, Brazil has consistently ranked as the tenth largest cruise source market, but its growth has lagged behind the broader industry. In 2025, Brazil’s passenger numbers grew by about one percent, reaching over 783,000. This was slower than comparable markets like Spain and far behind major markets such as the United States, Germany, the UK, Australia, and Canada. South America as a whole saw 1.22 million passengers in 2025, a 4.4 percent increase over 2024.
Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises remain the two largest players, each repositioning ships from Europe annually. For the 2026-2027 season, MSC will deploy five ships (Divina, Musica, Seaview, Splendida, and Virtuosa) while Costa will have two (Diadema and Serena) homeported in Brazil. Spanish companies like Quail Cruises and Pullmantur, which went bankrupt in 2011 and 2020 respectively, had previously developed the market but could not compete with the majors.
Brazil expects to gain one additional cruise ship for the 2026-2027 season, bringing the total to eight homeported vessels, up from seven in 2025. A startup Spanish company named Corazul is due to launch in Brazil with a local partner. Feliciano indicated that Corazul is considering extending the season, which could add as many as 30,000 berths. Traditionally, Brazilian cruises run from November to March, but Corazul may send its chartered ship, the Piano Land (to be renamed Buenavista), as early as late October and operate until April 2027. However, Corazul has canceled its European launch season and has yet to take delivery of the Chinese-owned vessel.
Brazil is also supporting cruise development by opening additional ports. This year, seven ports will be available for embarkation and disembarkation. During the conference, tourism leaders discussed expanding joint promotion of the region at international industry events. Uruguay’s Minister of Tourism, Pablo Menoni, highlighted the opportunities of a joint strategy among South American countries, pointing to the diversity of ports and the potential to extend cruises to Chilean ports. They also discussed public policies to improve competitiveness and address issues like port costs.
