Brazil’s cattle herd is forecast to contract for a third consecutive year in 2026, yet export volumes continue to rise, according to an update from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). The total cattle supply is projected at 225 million head, down 4% from 234 million head in 2025, marking the largest reduction in recent history. Tighter supply lifted calf prices by 27% and fed cattle prices by 19% in 2025. As of 14 August, Brazil’s deadweight steer price stood at £3.28/kg, more than £2/kg below the EU average.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) still ranks Brazil as the world’s second-largest beef producer, with beginning cattle stocks forecast at 178.2 million head in 2026, down from 186.9 million head in 2025. The calf crop is expected to remain unchanged at 47.2 million head. The USDA attributes the contraction to economic pressures such as high interest rates, tariffs, taxes, and a weak currency, which weigh on producers’ capacity. Calf prices are forecast to rise further in 2026 due to reduced availability from heavy slaughter in earlier years.

Brazil’s beef exports reached 1.7 million tonnes in the first half of 2026, up 15% year-on-year and higher than any previous first-half period in the last seven years. Frozen product dominates at 81% of total exports, rising 18% to 1.3 million tonnes. Fresh beef and offal exports grew 5% and 8% respectively, while processed beef fell 7%. China remains the top destination, taking 47% of export volume in H1 2026, with volumes up 23% to 774,000 tonnes. However, after Chinese safeguards were triggered in July, monthly exports to China dropped 48%, pulling total exports down 17% month-on-month, though some volume was diverted to other markets.

The US is Brazil’s second-largest export destination, accounting for 12% of H1 2026 volumes, up 13% year-on-year to 203,000 tonnes. Brazil’s share of US imports fell to 20% from 23% in H1 2025, as competition from Australia intensified. The EU saw a 56% surge in Brazilian beef imports in H1 2026, reaching 53,000 tonnes, likely due to buyers front-loading purchases ahead of the EU’s suspension of Brazilian animal products from 3 September 2026 over antimicrobial use concerns. The value of this trade rose 60%.

UK imports of Brazilian beef grew 33% in H1 2026 to 15,000 tonnes, with fresh and frozen volumes up 43% and 47% respectively, and processed up 23%. The total value of imports rose 42%, with fresh beef value up 64%, indicating a shift toward higher-value cuts. The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) has said the UK will not impose import restrictions on 3 September and will conduct its own technical assessment of Brazil’s antimicrobial assurances, expected to take around six months. During this period, imports may continue. These developments, combined with the shift toward higher-value products, make UK import flows from Brazil a key watchpoint for the rest of the year.
