Boakai Axes Security Officials as Liberia Drug Probe Intensifies
President Joseph Boakai has ordered the suspension and dismissal of several senior officials across various security agencies and ports of entry, as the investigation into two massive cocaine seizures intensifies. The move marks the most extensive personnel changes yet in the high-profile inquiry that has captured both national and international attention.
The dismissals follow the public destruction of the confiscated cocaine. The government estimated the second cache to be worth $317 million, while the initial consignment was valued at $19 million. With a combined value of $336 million, the seizures represent the largest drug bust in the country’s history.
Meanwhile, during a press conference this week, the Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman said a drug cartel has infiltrated local media outlets to manipulate news coverage. The accusation sparked immediate outrage, prompting the Press Union of Liberia to issue the government a 72-hour ultimatum to substantiate the explosive claim.
