Baldwin addresses affordability and Iran war in Green Bay visit

GREEN BAY (WLUK) — U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin visited Green Bay for her statewide “Ending Chaos, Lowering Costs” tour on Wednesday.

Baldwin (D) spoke to constituents about how she says the Trump Administration’s trade policies and war with Iran are driving up costs for Wisconsin small businesses and their consumers.

“Since the Trump administration has been in its second term, we’ve seen a lot of chaos and increasing prices. This tour I’ve been taking around the state has emphasized ending the chaos and lowering costs,” Baldwin said.

The “chaos” she refers to are the tariffs on important goods and materials, and the conflict in Iran. Baldwin described the difficulties faced by Americans trying to expand their businesses, stating that with these tariffs in place, it makes it harder to them purchase materials to build products, as well as employ US workers.

“Again, this administration promised to eliminate foreign conflicts and lower costs on day one, and we’ve been seeing them make choices to do just the opposite,” stated Baldwin.

Baldwin did state that tariffs are not inherently a bad thing, saying that they can be used, but sparingly, and use them against businesses trying to cheat America. She went on to say that these kinds of tariffs need to be discussed and put into place by congress, so that they can be used and applied effectively, which Baldwin says didn’t occur here.

“The supreme court reviewed [Trump’s] first round of tariffs and said ‘no, the president does not have the authority to impose these kinds of tariffs’.” said Baldwin.

A poll conducted by Small Business Majority in June found that 63% of small business owners reported decreased profit margins this year and 74% reported that they are being impacted by recent increases in fuel and transportation costs.
