Al-Burhan discusses Sudan peace process with Quintet delegation
Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan met with a delegation from the international Quintet mechanism in Khartoum to discuss peace efforts and the political process in the country. The meeting took place at the presidential palace, Anadolu Agency reports, citing a statement by Sudan’s Sovereignty Council.

The Quintet includes the UN, the African Union, the European Union, the League of Arab States, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development. Al-Burhan welcomed the delegation and briefed its representatives on the overall developments in Sudan.
Mohamed Ibn Chambas, head of the African Union High-Level Panel on Sudan, described the meeting as constructive. According to him, the purpose of the visit is to combine the Quintet’s efforts outside Sudan with Sudanese initiatives inside the country.

The Quintet’s position
Chambas stated that joint efforts should contribute to a credible and inclusive political process that will lead to a transition to a democratic government reflecting the aspirations of the Sudanese people. He also stressed the Quintet’s conviction that there is no military solution to the war in Sudan.
According to Chambas, a sustainable political process must be accompanied by practical and concrete steps to protect civilians and end hostilities. He also reaffirmed the Quintet’s respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, as well as its rejection of the creation of any parallel structures.
The delegation arrived in Sudan on Tuesday for a three-day visit for direct political consultations with relevant Sudanese parties. Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been fighting amid differences related to integrating the paramilitary formation into the military structure. According to the agency, the conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced 13 million people, and caused famine.
