By Lewis S. Teh

MONROVIA, Liberia, August 13, 2026 — Eleven Liberian scholars are departing for China to pursue advanced studies under the 2026/2027 Government of Liberia-China Bilateral Scholarship Program, as the government seeks to strengthen the country’s human capital in key development sectors.

The Ministry of Education held a pre-departure orientation for the beneficiaries, comprising nine males and two females, ahead of their studies in China.

The orientation focused on academic expectations, discipline, integrity, cultural adaptation and personal responsibility, as well as the scholars’ roles as representatives of Liberia while studying abroad.

Education Minister Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah told the recipients that the opportunity carries responsibilities beyond obtaining academic qualifications.

“The scholarship carries responsibilities beyond earning an academic qualification,” Jallah said. “Acquire knowledge and specialized skills that can contribute to solving national development challenges upon your return.”

She urged the scholars to maintain high standards of discipline and integrity and represent Liberia positively throughout their studies.

The beneficiaries will pursue advanced degrees in fields considered important to Liberia’s development priorities, including finance, public management, business administration, public administration, information and communication engineering, infectious disease prevention and control, comparative education, and curriculum and methodology.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Jimmy George, who will pursue a doctorate in Comparative Education, thanked the Government of Liberia for the opportunity.

George pledged that the scholars would strive for academic excellence and use the knowledge and expertise acquired in China to contribute to Liberia’s development upon their return.

The Ministry said the bilateral scholarship program forms part of the government’s broader human capital development efforts by providing Liberians opportunities to acquire specialized knowledge and skills in areas critical to national development.

It said the program also strengthens educational cooperation between Liberia and China while building a pool of skilled professionals to support implementation of the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.

The Ministry congratulated the beneficiaries and urged them to make full use of the opportunity as they begin their studies in China.
