Zimbabwe lose opening tri series match to South Africa by 7 wickets

ZIMBABWE suffered a 7-wicket defeat against South Africa in their opening tri-series match at Windhoek Stadium in Namibia on Saturday.

The Chevrons won the toss and opted to bat first, hence posting a weak total of 148 runs in 20 overs, losing 8 wickets in the process.

Zimbabwe’s opening batsman Brian Bennet and Ben Curran were the best perfomers as they each posted 34 and 24 runs respectively.

Bennet’s 34 runs score was the highest for Zimbabwe followed by Tadiwanashe Marumani’s 30 runs and Ben Curran’s total, while the rest posted below 20 runs.

Team captain Sikandar Raza was one of the poor performers on the day, as he only managed 10 runs, the same with his fellow middle order batsman Ryan Burl 4 runs.

Having posted a total of 144 runs , Zimbabwe struggled to restrict South Africa from attaining its set target of 145 runs , hence it only took them 13.5 overs to win the match.

South Africa were mainly helped to reach target by their top order batsmen Luan Dre Pretorious (22), Jordan Herman (20) and Dewald Brevis (70) who posted a combined total of 102 runs out of the set target of 145 runs.

Zimbabwe were poor in the second innings, as they only got 3 wickets before South Africa reached their set target of 145 runs to win the match with 7 wickets to spare.

The Chevrons will be hoping to redeem themselves on Monday when they play host Namibia who won against South Africa in their opening match of the series by 18 runs.
