PSL bosses Irvin Khoza, Kaizer Motaung show solidarity following Danny Jordaan’s SAFA victory

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) maintained its status as SAFA’s Special Member after attending the re-election of Danny Jordaan as the association’s president for a fourth successive term.

Jordaan won the election by a landslide, receiving 157 votes compared to 82 for challenger Sandile Zungu. As designated voters alongside the regions and associate member associations, the PSL exercised its voting rights.

Over the years, it has been widely reported that the PSL and SAFA did not see eye to eye despite their affiliations under the SAFA and CAF constitutions, with the professional league often skipping the association’s events.

However, PSL head honchos — Chairman Irvin Khoza and Executive Committee member Kaizer Motaung — attended the quadrennial elective congress at Vodacom World in Midrand on Saturday afternoon.

Before proceedings began, the pair exchanged pleasantries with challenger Zungu, who serves as a Board of Governors (BoG) member in his capacity as president of top-flight side AmaZulu.

During proceedings, Khoza and Motaung shared the podium with Jordaan and SAFA Chief Executive Lydia Monyepao, signalling their support for Jordaan’s continuation as SAFA president.

As PSL Chairman, Khoza automatically serves as one of SAFA’s vice-presidents. Following Jordaan’s re-election victory, he took to the podium to outline the league’s operational stance for the next four-year cycle.

Given this public show of unity, South African football supporters will hope the two entities work hand in hand to address pressing administrative issues, including the implementation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, which remains a key talking point following Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie’s state funding commitments toward its rollout.
