Yoga Day 2026 Activities Gather Steam in Monrovia

MONROVIA, May 29, 2026 – As the world prepares for International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21, the Embassy of India in Monrovia has rolled out a series of activities stirring growing interest and participation. The events underscore yoga’s rising popularity as a means to foster health, harmony, and well-being.

The main celebration will be held on June 21 at Monrovia City Hall, drawing participants from across Liberia in a show of wellness and unity.

Since the United Nations General Assembly’s 2014 resolution declaring June 21 as International Day of Yoga, the observance has grown into a global movement. The initiative has received widespread support, reflecting yoga’s recognized role in promoting health, mental well-being, and balanced living.

Yoga, which originated in India, is a holistic practice designed to unite mind, body, and spirit. The word ‘yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit ‘Yuj,’ meaning ‘to unite.’ Today, yoga is practiced worldwide by people from all backgrounds.

International Day of Yoga now serves as more than just a celebration of physical exercise. It raises awareness about healthy lifestyles and the link between individual well-being and stronger communities.

Preparations in Monrovia began on May 15 with a curtain-raiser event at Unification Park. Ambassador of India H.E. Manoj Bihari Verma joined local and expatriate yoga enthusiasts, reflecting the event’s inclusive spirit.

On May 25, a yoga-themed painting competition was organized with Aware International School. Children of various ages took part, expressing their understanding of yoga through art.

The artworks highlighted the imagination of Monrovia’s youth and reflected growing awareness of yoga’s values among students from diverse backgrounds. Organizers said the competition reinforced yoga’s universal appeal.

With anticipation building for June 21, more activities are planned in the coming weeks to encourage participation and promote yoga’s benefits within the Liberian community.

The 12th International Day of Yoga arrives as the world faces ongoing challenges. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Wellness, Wisdom and World Peace,” aims to highlight yoga’s role in fostering resilience and harmony.
