World Cup excitement gives boost to youth soccer

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Youth soccer is growing in New Mexico, with nearly 250 more kids registered by the end of August than usual.

Excitement around the World Cup could help drive that growth even more. The New Mexico Youth Soccer Association currently serves about 21,000 players statewide and hopes that number keeps rising.

Fernando Gomez, a fifth grader, said the World Cup helped inspire him to play soccer.

“I want to become like some football legends, like how they play,” said Fernando Gomez.

Gomez also shared his favorite player and team.

“My favorite player is Ronaldo and my favorite team is Spain.” said Gomez.

The association hopes to grow by at least 500 more kids by the end of the season, reaching up to 21,500 players statewide.

Growing interest at La Mesa Elementary

The interest in soccer is also showing up at events in Albuquerque, including a clinic at La Mesa Elementary in the International District where New Mexico United partnered with community leaders.

The clinic had support from the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association and gave kids a chance to meet professional players and learn the game. School leaders said the excitement stood out during the event.

“These kids were yelling, they’re screaming, they were pumped up to have the United Soccer team come out and do the camp.” said Joseph Fernandez, La Mesa’s principal. “It means the world for this community and La Mesa Elementary School. Couldn’t ask for anything more. These kids really deserve this opportunity and it’s been great.”
