Twenty-five-year-old Nadisha Montgomery, the woman who is charged with the murder of her boyfriend Imani Richards last month, has been offered bail in the sum of $450,000.

Mr. Richards died after he was stabbed during an alleged domestic dispute.

Ms. Montgomery was offered bail following an application by her attorney Alexander Shaw in the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday.

Mr. Shaw in his application said his client was charged with murder simply because she chose to fight back.

He said ordinarily, Ms. Montgomery would be considered a battered woman if Jamaica recognised the defence of battered women syndrome.

However, the attorney said at the very least his client can rely on the partial defence of provocation and it will be a matter of fact for the tribunal, as self-defence does arise on the Crown’s case.

Mr. Shaw argued that his client is not a flight risk, and is a fit and proper candidate for bail.

He argued further that Ms. Montgomery has a three-year-old child who needs a mother’s care and that she was gainfully employed.

She was subsequently granted bail with reporting conditions and a stop order imposed.

She is to return to court on November 11.
