Myoka stands firm with ‘Rock Stone’
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Recording artiste Myoka is celebrating Jamaica’s strength and resilience with her latest single, Rock Stone, recorded on Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor’s popular Hill and Gully Riddim.
For Myoka, the song reflects the struggles and sacrifices of Jamaica’s ancestors while celebrating the determination that has allowed generations to overcome adversity.
“The inspiration for Rock Stone comes from the struggles, sacrifices, strength and resilience of our ancestors,” she said. “The message I want people to take away from the song is that Jamaica and Jamaicans are resilient, strong and born to lead.”
Myoka said she felt an immediate spiritual connection when she heard the traditional elements fused with McGregor’s production.
“The production has that special quality where you don’t just hear it — you feel it. It makes you move, but at the same time it takes you back to your roots,” she said.
The Hill and Gully Riddim has attracted recordings from several artistes, and Myoka would welcome recognition from McGregor for her song.
“To have him recognise my song Rock Stone would be an incredible honour,” she said. “I approached the riddim with respect for its history while bringing my own voice and spirituality to it.”
The song also mirrors Myoka’s personal and professional journey, which she describes as “bittersweet”, marked by opportunities, disappointments and sacrifices.
“Like a rock stone, I have learned how to remain grounded and keep standing. Every challenge has strengthened me and every closed door has taught me something,” she said.
Having built her career between Jamaica and the United States, Myoka credits Jamaica with providing her cultural and musical foundation, while America exposed her to a larger marketplace and new opportunities.
As a woman in the music industry, she has also learned the importance of preparation and professionalism.
“You have to understand your craft, know your worth, remain professional and always be willing to give 110 per cent,” she said.
Beyond Rock Stone, Myoka is working on a full gospel album inspired by her faith and gratitude to God. She also has two collaborations in development and upcoming singles Island Vibes and Hot Summa.
The projects reflect her multi-genre approach and versatility.
“There is the spiritual side, the cultural side, the fun side, and the side that simply loves good Jamaican music,” Myoka said.
She wants her brand to represent “joy, fierce love, strength, faith and perseverance.”
“No matter what life puts in front of you, keep moving, keep believing and keep standing strong. That is Myoka,” she stressed.
