Weah Mourns Liberia’s Grand Mufti Abass Kanneh | Obituaries

Former President George Manneh Weah has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Dr. Abass Kanneh, Grand Mufti of the Republic of Liberia, describing his passing as a profound loss not only for Liberia’s Muslim community but for the entire nation.

In a condolence message issued Tuesday from Paynesville while abroad, Weah also sympathized with the National Muslim Council of Liberia, the wider Muslim community in Liberia and around the world, the country’s interfaith community, and all Liberians following the Grand Mufti’s death on July 29, 2026, in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Expressing his personal connection to Liberia’s Muslim community, the former President said he deeply shares in their grief and pledged to visit the bereaved family and the National Muslim Council upon his return to Liberia.

“The Muslim Community and I have also come a long way,” Weah said.

“I attended Muslim Congress. I was, at some point, a Muslim and later converted back to Christianity, where I remain today. They are also my people. Just like the Christian community, when they are bereaved, I am bereaved; when they suffer a loss, it is my loss, as in this case with the passing of Dr. Abass Kanneh, Grand Mufti of the Republic of Liberia.”

He added that he intends to personally visit the Kanneh family and the National Muslim Council to convey his condolences.

Former President Weah described the late Grand Mufti as an accomplished educator, an expert in Islamic theology, comparative theology, and Islamic jurisprudence, whose influence extended beyond Liberia’s borders.

He praised Dr. Kanneh as a respected Islamic scholar, patriot, and advocate for peace, social justice, and national unity.

According to Weah, the late religious leader devoted his life to promoting religious tolerance, education, and harmonious coexistence among Liberians of different faiths.

The former President said Dr. Kanneh’s legacy would endure through his scholarship, selfless service, and unwavering commitment to strengthening Liberia’s Muslim community and advancing interfaith dialogue.

“The late Grand Mufti will be remembered for his teachings, scholarly contributions, selflessness, and dedicated service to the Muslim community, the interfaith community, Liberia, and humanity at large,” Weah said.

Concluding his message, Weah prayed that the Kanneh family, the National Muslim Council of Liberia, Muslims across Liberia and around the world, the country’s religious community, and all Liberians would find strength and comfort during this period of mourning.

He said he joins the nation in honoring the life and legacy of a religious leader whose contributions to peace, education, and national cohesion will remain an enduring part of Liberia’s history.
