US Reiterates Support for Al-Zaidi, Says Iraq Troop Withdrawal Remains on Track
In a response provided to Kurdistan24 on Monday, a State Department spokesperson said Washington supports Zaidi’s vision for “a brighter future for all Iraqis free from terrorism,” as well as his efforts to prevent attacks in and from Iraqi territory.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The United States has reiterated its support for Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s efforts to strengthen Iraqi sovereignty and build a “strong and mutually beneficial” partnership between Washington and Baghdad, the US State Department told Kurdistan24.
In a response provided to Kurdistan24 on Monday, a State Department spokesperson said Washington supports Zaidi’s vision for “a brighter future for all Iraqis free from terrorism,” as well as his efforts to prevent attacks in and from Iraqi territory.
“We support Prime Minister Al-Zaidi’s efforts to enforce and exercise Iraqi sovereignty as the country embarks on a new direction under his leadership, in full partnership with the United States,” the spokesperson said.
The statement also reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to withdrawing US military forces from Iraq by September 30.
“We remain focused on implementing the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from Iraq by September 30,” the spokesperson said.
The comments follow Zaidi’s five-day official visit to Washington from July 13 to 18, his first international trip since taking office.
During the visit, Zaidi met with US President Donald Trump at the White House on July 14, where the two sides discussed establishing a comprehensive strategic and economic partnership.
Zaidi also held talks with US officials on regional developments, defense and intelligence cooperation, banking reforms, and financing for Iraq’s digital economy. A high-level delegation accompanying the prime minister included representatives from the Kurdistan Regional Government.
The State Department’s latest remarks reaffirm the Trump administration’s support for the Iraqi government as Washington prepares to complete the withdrawal of its military forces from Iraq by the end of September.
