Iraq and the Necessity of Combating Financial and Administrative Corruption

Baghdad, Iraq – Today, Thursday, Iraqi President Nizar Amidi called for the necessity of creating a qualitative shift in the country’s economic structure by diversifying sources of income and sources of the national economy. He also called for intensifying efforts to attract foreign and local investments, stressing at the same time the paramount importance of purifying the investment and financial environment from the scourge of financial and administrative corruption that is rampant in various state departments and institutions.

Strategic partnership and integration between the public and private sectors

The Iraqi President made these remarks in a pivotal speech delivered during the “Sulaymaniyah Economic Summit 2026.” He emphasized that the concerted efforts and collaboration among government institutions, civil society organizations, partners, and independent bodies constitute a fundamental pillar for formulating and proposing fiscal, banking, and economic policies. He added that this cooperation contributes to the development and implementation of such policies in a manner that serves the goal of building a growing and advanced national economy.

Amidi explained that this partnership in devising solutions and formulating policies takes on critical importance given the current regional circumstances. Consequently, joint action is essential to overcome the repercussions of regional security issues and avert their negative impact on the national economy and citizens’ daily lives. In this context, he affirmed the Presidency’s full support for efforts to enable the private sector to play a pivotal and active role in implementing major strategic projects. He also emphasized support for developing infrastructure and the services sector, as well as creating new job opportunities for youth, while enforcing standards of transparency and competitiveness. Furthermore, he underscored the importance of safeguarding public funds and protecting the rights of both the State and investors.

A national vision for stability, economic diversification, and digital transformation.

The Iraqi President emphasized that the success of these partnerships depends directly on the integration of the state’s role with the efficiency of the private sector and its exceptional capacity for investment and innovation. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of attracting capital and advanced technological expertise to achieve a more diversified and competitive economy. He added that experience has clearly demonstrated that political and security stability cannot be fully realized—or yield its true benefits—without achieving sustainable economic and social stability.

Amidi emphasized his unwavering commitment to working toward regional stability, fostering peaceful dialogue among all parties, and upholding Iraq’s national sovereignty. Furthermore, he underscored the necessity of formulating a long-term strategic national vision grounded in the integration of state institutions, the rule of law, and the sound management of natural and financial resources. He also highlighted the importance of a carefully planned, gradual transition toward a diversified and productive economy, alongside optimal investment in youth and modern technology. He regarded the continued purging of corruption from the economic and service sectors as the most critical fundamental step toward creating a secure environment that attracts investment and global corporate operations. Finally, he stressed the need for unequivocal support for the judiciary, integrity bodies, and oversight institutions.
