UNSMIL: Dialogue participants call for unified government to lead Libya toward elections

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) reported that participants in the Governance Track of the Structured Dialogue held an online discussion with the public on Libya’s political challenges and pathways toward unified governance and credible elections aimed at strengthening state institutions.

According to UNSMIL, participants emphasized that the continued division of the executive authority remains a key obstacle to political progress. They stressed the urgent need to form a unified government capable of exercising authority across the entire country and restoring public trust, warning that institutional fragmentation continues to hinder decision-making and delay essential reforms.

The session included 30 participants in the online forum and was followed by around 130 viewers via livestream.

Discussions also focused on creating the necessary conditions for elections and ending Libya’s prolonged transitional period. Some participants cautioned against entering a new transitional phase, noting that the absence of an agreed constitutional and legal framework was the main reason previous electoral efforts failed.
