UNICEF Urges Stronger Efforts to Protect Yemeni Children from Landmines

Al-Dhalea — The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for intensified efforts to protect children in Yemen from the dangers of landmines and explosive remnants of war, following the death of five children and injuries to seven others in an explosion in Al-Reibi village, Al-Dhalea governorate.

In a statement, UNICEF said it was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy, which occurred as the children were collecting scrap metal. The organization extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished a swift recovery for the injured.

UNICEF stressed that landmines and unexploded ordnance remain a grave threat across Yemen, noting that children are the most vulnerable due to displacement and the presence of explosives in areas where they live, study, and play.

The agency underscored: “No child should lose their life, be injured, or live in fear because of remnants of war.” It urged the acceleration of mine clearance operations, expansion of awareness programs, and provision of ongoing support for survivors and affected families.

The deadly incident on Monday highlighted the continuing humanitarian crisis in Yemen, where explosive remnants of war many linked to Houthi forces continue to claim civilian lives.
