The United Nations has voiced deep concern over Yemen’s slide into a new and broader cycle of escalation, warning that the country and the wider region cannot withstand the consequences of further conflict at this critical juncture.
During an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Yemen, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, Khaled Khiari, called on all parties to engage constructively in UN-sponsored negotiations. He stressed that dialogue remains the only viable path to de-escalation and to ensuring safe, sustainable, and predictable civil aviation operations.
Khiari cautioned that unilateral measures will not bring peace, but instead risk deepening divisions, accelerating fragmentation, and heightening the danger of renewed military confrontations. He underscored the imperative of adhering to international law, the UN Charter, international humanitarian law, and Security Council resolutions, while reaffirming support for Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
The session highlighted mounting international alarm over the fragile situation, with UN officials urging restraint and renewed commitment to a political process that could prevent Yemen from plunging into another destructive phase of conflict.
