Public Prosecution orders detention of two Ghat Municipality officials in water project corruption case

Libya’s Public Prosecution has ordered the pretrial detention of two Ghat Municipality officials over alleged financial and administrative corruption linked to a municipal water reservoir project.

According to the Office of the Attorney General, the Director of the Municipality’s Projects Office and the project supervisor allegedly conspired with the contractor’s representative to falsify official documents claiming that a phase of the project had been completed, despite the work not having been carried out as reported.

Prosecutors said the forged documents were used in an attempt to misappropriate LYD 232,000 in public funds allocated to the water infrastructure project.

The two officials have been detained pending further investigation after being confronted with the evidence. The Public Prosecution has also issued an arrest warrant for the contractor’s representative as investigations continue.
