Minister of State for Displaced Affairs and Human Rights, Jamal Abuqrein, has held talks with the UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya, Georgette Gagnon, on strengthening technical cooperation in human rights and displacement issues.
The meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters, focused on enhancing coordination, capacity building and institutional partnerships, as well as supporting durable solutions for displaced people.
Abuqrein outlined the ministry’s priorities, including efforts to protect and promote human rights and address displacement. He stressed the importance of establishing an integrated national system based on unified databases to improve coordination between state institutions and support evidence-based planning and decision-making.
Officials also reviewed key projects, including national databases for displaced people and human rights, and plans to establish a national data centre. The ministry highlighted its work on developing monitoring and documentation mechanisms and strengthening institutional capacity.
The talks also covered mediation and peacebuilding efforts through national initiatives implemented in cooperation with local institutions and with technical support from the Cordoba Peace Institute in Geneva, aimed at supporting dialogue and enabling safe and voluntary returns for displaced communities.
For her part, Gagnon praised the ministry’s “foundational efforts” in building its institutional structures and technical tools, and expressed the UN’s readiness to provide further technical support and capacity building in line with national priorities.
Both sides agreed on the need to maintain coordination through regular technical meetings and to expand cooperation to support human rights protection, durable solutions for displaced people, and broader efforts towards stability and sustainable development.
