UN chief welcomes Libya election agreement

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed an agreement signed in Libya on Sunday aimed at advancing the first two stages of a UN-backed political roadmap.

The agreement covers the restructuring of the board of Libya’s High National Elections Commission and resolving outstanding disputes over the legal framework for presidential and parliamentary elections.

Guterres described the agreement as an important step towards holding nationwide elections and ending Libya’s transitional period, according to UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric.

He called on all relevant Libyan institutions and political actors to engage in good faith to advance implementation of the agreement.

The UN chief said the deal demonstrated that progress could be achieved through dialogue.
