Ukraine Recovers 501 Fallen Soldiers Claimed by Russia — UNITED24 Media
Ukraine recovered the bodies of 501 individuals, whom Russian authorities claim were Ukrainian military personnel.
The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed the repatriation, noting that the returned remains will undergo rigorous identification and forensic procedures to establish their identities, according to The Kyiv Independent on July 16.

In prior repatriation processes, Russia has occasionally sent the remains of its own soldiers back to Kyiv. Ukrainian officials previously stated that this practice was likely designed to help Moscow avoid paying state compensation to the families of deceased Russian servicemen, or simply reflected a negligent attitude toward their own citizens.
The Coordination Headquarters did not clarify how many of the 501 repatriated bodies belong to civilians and how many to military service members. Forensic experts and investigators are tasked with performing DNA matching and other scientific analyses to identify the deceased before handing them over to their families.
Kyiv expressed gratitude to the International Committee of the Red Cross for facilitating the logistics of this transfer. Ukrainian authorities also thanked the servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who managed the transportation of the remains to specialized state facilities and coordinated with forensic departments.
The repatriation of fallen Ukrainians has seen an increase in frequency since the resumption of peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in early 2025. These repatriation initiatives have stood out as one of the very few areas of stable, ongoing humanitarian cooperation between Ukraine and Russia since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
This latest operation follows a previous transfer on June 18, when Ukraine recovered the remains of 522 individuals that Russia asserted were Ukrainian military personnel.
While Ukrainian authorities consistently publish the numbers of repatriated remains received from the Russian side, Kyiv does not publicly disclose the number of Russian soldiers’ remains returned to Moscow.
