Ukraine has ramped up its attacks on Russian territory. On the night of Wednesday, 29 July, it successfully hit two logistics centres of Wildberries, the primary online retailer in Russia, with drone strikes in the Penza and Udmurtia regions.
Wildberries employees have been evacuated, with only one injured. Shipments from the targeted warehouse have been rerouted to other facilities, Governor Oleg Melnichenko of Penza has informed, according to a piece published on The Moscow Times’ website.
Parts of the hit warehouses were still on fire the morning following the attack, on 30 July, as evidenced by video footage taken and published online by locals.
As the X post above points out, these Wildberries logistics centres cover massive areas, tens of thousands of square metres (or hundreds of thousands of square feet). They also hold millions of items.
In Sarapul, Russia, a city in the Udmurtia Republic, roughly 1,200 kilometres (750 miles) from the Ukrainian border, the Russian online retailer said it evacuated staff from one of its warehouses after receiving a warning of a drone attack. The strike later ignited a fire at the facility. According to videos capturing the attack, the Ukrainian Defence Forces used Fire Point FP-1 long-range drones in the strike.
Ukraine has accused the Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries of helping President Vladimir Putin’s war efforts against the country, hence the targeted drone strikes against its facilities.
Governor Olga Abramova of Udmurtia has stated that there were no reports of injuries and that emergency crews had been dispatched to deal with the aftermath. Russia’s Investigative Committee announced that it had opened terrorism-related criminal investigations into the drone attacks in both the Penza and Udmurtia regions.
Meanwhile, unverified reports also claimed that a Wildberries warehouse in the Perm region had been targeted by Ukrainian drones as well. However, neither the company nor Russian officials have confirmed those claims.
Ports in Taman, Russia, in the Krasnodar Krai were also attacked by Ukrainian drone strikes on the same night.
In response, Russia has launched missile strikes into Ukraine that killed eight. One of the missiles crashed down within the territory of Poland, a NATO member state. However, it is unclear whether Moscow deliberately targeted Poland, or it hit the country unintentionally, as the rocket struck the ground around 100 kilometres (62 miles) from its border with Ukraine.
Nonetheless, Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland has stated that Poland’s airspace had been violated in Russia’s missile attack overnight.
