Ukraine Drone Swarm Hits Russia: 450+ UAVs Target 16 Regions, 12 Killed in Tatarstan Strike

Ukraine launched one of its largest reported drone attacks against Russia overnight on Aug. 10, with Moscow claiming more than 450 UAVs targeted 16 regions and occupied Crimea.

The strike came as Russia continued a week-long escalation of its bombardment campaign against Ukraine, unleashing hundreds of missiles, drones, and guided aerial bombs.

In Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan, authorities said 12 people were killed and 39 injured following the drone attack on Nizhnekamsk.

Tatarstan officials said the attack targeted industrial and civilian facilities. The regional government did not specify which sites were damaged but confirmed casualties and said Tatarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov had declared a day of mourning.

An analysis of eyewitness photos and videos by Russian outlet Astra suggested that the drones may have targeted Nizhnekamskneftekhim (NKNKh), one of Russia’s largest petrochemical complexes.

NKNKh is a key facility of the Volga cluster of Russian petrochemical giant Sibur and one of the country’s leading producers of synthetic rubber. The industrial zone in Nizhnekamsk where the complex is located also houses Tatneft’s oil refinery and the TAIF-NK oil processing complex.

The area has previously been targeted in drone attacks. In June, drones struck the Tatneft refinery, while TAIF-NK was reportedly attacked in early July. NKNKh itself was targeted in March, when Russian authorities said one person was killed and 50 others were injured.

Ukrainian Telegram channels Supernova+ and Exilenova+ also reported that drones struck the Nizhnekamsk oil refinery and published footage showing a fire at the site. The claims have not been independently verified.

Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyaev announced a drone threat early on Aug. 10 but initially provided no further details. Local authorities later confirmed that drones had targeted both industrial and civilian infrastructure.

Russia’s defense ministry claimed its air defenses destroyed or intercepted 456 Ukrainian drones overnight.

According to the ministry, drones were downed over the regions of Bryansk, Kursk, Kaluga, Tula, Belgorod, Oryol, Voronezh, Rostov, Penza, Ulyanovsk, Saratov, Orenburg, and Samara, as well as Moscow region, Krasnodar Krai, Tatarstan, and occupied Crimea.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said 23 drones were destroyed while approaching the Russian capital.

In Russia’s Rostov region, Governor Yuri Slyusar claimed more than 70 drones were shot down overnight, including over Kamensk-Shakhtinsky and seven districts of the region.

Kaluga Region Governor Vladislav Shapsha said 16 drones were destroyed over the region, adding that there were no casualties or damage.

The strike came as Russia continued a week-long escalation of its bombardment campaign against Ukraine, unleashing hundreds of missiles, drones, and guided aerial bombs.

Ukrainian officials have described the recent Russian attacks as among the most intense of the war. In a statement on Aug. 9, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had launched 61 missiles – including 56 with ballistic trajectories – more than 1,560 attack drones and 1,540 guided aerial bombs against Ukrainian cities over the past week.

In Kyiv alone, 27 people were killed during the week of intensified Russian strikes.

Ukraine has increasingly used long-range drones to strike military, energy and industrial targets inside Russia, saying the attacks are aimed at weakening Moscow’s ability to wage its war against Ukraine.

Kyiv has repeatedly said such strikes are a response to Russia’s continued missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
