Uganda, Malaysian Coffee Firm Discuss Boosting Coffee Exports to ASEAN

KUALA LUMPUR — The Uganda High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has held a strategic engagement with COFFEX, a major coffee importer and roaster in Malaysia, as part of preparations for an upcoming Uganda Coffee Cupping Event.

The meeting brought together Uganda’s diplomatic mission and COFFEX to discuss opportunities for promoting Ugandan coffee in Malaysia and the wider Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) market.

The Uganda Coffee Cupping Event is expected to showcase the quality, diversity and distinctive profiles of Ugandan coffee to Malaysian and other ASEAN coffee buyers.

Uganda’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Amb. Dr Betty Bigombe, welcomed the growing collaboration with COFFEX, noting that the partnership had already contributed to increased exports of Ugandan coffee to Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region.

COFFEX currently imports Robusta coffee from Uganda and expressed interest in increasing its import volumes.

The company also indicated that it intends to use its network to connect other coffee importers and roasters in Malaysia and across the ASEAN region with Ugandan coffee producers and exporters for direct sourcing.

The engagement is part of Uganda’s efforts to expand its coffee export markets and strengthen commercial links between Ugandan producers and international buyers.

The upcoming cupping event will provide an opportunity for Malaysian and regional buyers to sample different Ugandan coffee varieties and explore potential sourcing and business partnerships.
