Two Italians who were part of a group
of Global Sumud activists detained in Libya at the weekend have
been transferred to Benghazi and are being treated as possible
illegal migrants, sources said Monday.
They may be expelled from Libya soon, the sources said.
Maria Elena Delia, the Italian spokesperson for the Global Sumud
Flotilla, on Sunday said the movement had lost contact with a
group of around 10 people involved in a ‘Land Convoy’ seeking to
get aid to Gaza via land though Egypt after they entered the
area of Libya controlled by General Khalifa Haftar at Sirte.
“They may have been arrested; they were negotiating at a
checkpoint with Haftar’s militias,” Delia said.
The convey featured a car and am ambulance.
The two Italians were named as Domenico Centrone, a 33-year-old
from Molfetta, near Bari, and Piedmont native Dina Alberizia.
The Italian foreign ministry’s crisis unit is working on the
case.
