Trinidad and Tobago’s first defeat at the CWI Rising Stars Men’s Under-19 50-over tournament was a very heavy one, yesterday. The T&T youngsters crashed to a 106-run defeat to Jamaica in their third round match at the Liberta Sports Club in Antigua.
Captain Brendan Boodoo’s decision to send the opposition in after winning the toss did not pay off, as Jamaica rallied to 225 for eight in their allotted overs. That final total was due in the main to partnerships of 64 between top-scorers Ryan Lyttleton (41) and Adrian Silvera (52 not out) for the eighth wicket and 50 for the ninth between Silvera and Perico Henry (24 not out) that rescued the innings from the strife of 111 for seven in the 26th over.
Earlier, T&T had been in control of the game after removing Odane Binns (18), Demario Hall(four) and Demarco Scott (two) inside the first 11.3 overs. And the Jamaican wickets continued to fall to the combination of new ball bowler Daniel Holder (three for 53), Daron Dhanraj (two for 37) skipper Boodoo (two for 43) and Kaiden Pollard (one for 20).
However, with T&T having failed to cross 200 so far in the tournament, those extra late-wicket runs proved important for the Jamaicans. The T&T batters never made a contest of the run chase. They lost opener Zakariyya Mohammed (one) with six runs on the board, No. 3 Tariq Richards at 17 and the other opener, Levi Ghanny, at 38.
Only skipper Boodoo got to grips with the Jamaican bowlers, getting to 54 off 82 balls, with six fours. But he failed to get the necessary support at the other end as T&T crashed to 119 all out with 87 balls still remaining. Booddoo was ninth out (117 for nine), caught off the bowling of Jamaica’s sixth bowler, Geovanni Grey.
The win was Jamaica’s second in three matches. They will next face the Windward islands on Saturday, while T&T will have the stiff task of trying to stop rampant Barbados who stormed to their third straight win yesterday, beating Guyana by 63 runs at Coolidge Cricket Ground.
In the other game, the Leeward Islands crushed the Windwards by 144 runs at Bethesda Sports Ground.
