Tripoli hosts meeting to advance sovereign positions file

The Joint Committee on Sovereign Positions, formed by the High Council of State and the House of Representatives, held a meeting on Wednesday at the High Council of State headquarters in Tripoli, attended by committee members and the Council’s First Deputy Head, Hassan Habib.

According to a statement by the High Council of State’s media office, the meeting was part of ongoing coordination efforts between the two bodies to implement their agreement on appointing holders of sovereign positions, based on the Principles Document for the Roadmap to End the Transitional Phase and in line with the roadmap proposed by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

The committee discussed mechanisms for selecting candidates for sovereign positions, with particular focus on the chairperson and board members of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), considering the commission a key institution for completing the roadmap and creating the conditions necessary to hold elections.

Participants also reviewed a number of proposals aimed at strengthening consensus between the High Council of State and the House of Representatives, in support of the political process and efforts to unify Libya’s state institutions.

The committee affirmed that it will continue meeting in the coming period until appointments to the sovereign positions are finalized, in implementation of the understandings and agreements reached between the two councils.

It stressed that completing this file is an important step toward strengthening national consensus, fulfilling the remaining requirements of the transitional phase, creating a suitable environment for elections, and bringing Libya’s prolonged transitional period to an end in accordance with the agreed framework.

The meeting comes amid renewed Libyan and international efforts to advance the unification of state institutions and establish arrangements leading to national elections and the conclusion of the country’s long-running transitional phase.
