Tinubu orders NDDC to reconstruct Warri–Sapele–Benin road
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has directed the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to begin reconstructing the Warri–Sapele–Benin section of the East-West Road in Delta State.
Preparations for reconstruction
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, NDDC Managing Director Samuel Ogbuku announced the president’s directive. The outlet cited a report by The Guardian newspaper, according to which Ogbuku said this during an inspection of the road. The Guardian did not specify when the inspection took place.
According to Ogbuku, the presidential directive came after Works Minister David Umahi inspected the Benin–Agbor and Benin–Warri corridors. He also said that the commission had received the project from the Ministry of Works and was ready to begin reconstruction.
The NDDC chief apologized to residents and drivers suffering because of the poor condition of the highway and assured them that the commission would work to resolve the problem. According to The Guardian, two contractors are planned to be involved in the reconstruction.

Road conditions in Delta State
Delta State’s representative on the NDDC board, Monday Igbuya, said that Sapele had effectively been cut off from Warri and other parts of the state because of the road’s neglected condition. He called on the commission to intervene regarding other damaged roads in the area as well, including Eku Road, which, he said, makes travel difficult for residents and students.
The reconstruction announcement came several days after Umahi gave China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation 14 days to repair severely damaged sections of the Benin–Asaba highway. This included restoring sections near Ubri-Okiti and Onicha-Ugbo.
This was preceded by reports of major traffic jams and prolonged delays on the Benin–Asaba highway. According to Premium Times, some drivers and passengers spent several days on the road because of the damaged sections.
The Warri–Sapele–Benin and Benin–Asaba routes are important for transporting people, agricultural products, and commercial cargo between Edo and Delta states and other areas of southern Nigeria.
