TIGHT-LIPPED: Infantino refuses to talk about his future, at U-20 Women’s World Cup

If you were expecting FIFA President Gianni Infantino to comment about his future with the organization on Saturday, then you will be greatly disappointed.

After arriving in Katowice, Poland for the start of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, Sky News of England caught up with him. Poland played Argentina in the tournament opener.

Infantino refused to answer questions as to his future as FIFA boss.

The Sky Sports interviewee asked: “A lot of the world’s been waiting to hear from you. Are you ….”

Then Infantino interrupted him:

“I’m very happy to be. Let me say, here in beautiful Poland, in Katowice. A fantastic city for the Under-20 20 FIFA Women’s World Cup. It’s great. This is what we do. This is about giving opportunities, giving chances to teams, to players, to talents from all over the world, increasing number of participants. That’s what we do.

“For all the rest, you know, there will be a lot to say, but there will be a right place and the right time to say this. It’s not today, it’s not here. … And today we are enjoying football. We are continuing at FIFA, of course, to work to give every corner of the world a chance, an opportunity, a dignity to find ways and means for them to become better and to participate and to celebrate football, which we all love.”

Infantino then was asked: “Are you definitely fighting Are you definitely fighting the election? Are you definitely fighting the election or have you considered resigning? Do you apologize to the fans?”

Infantino, who smiled during a good portion of the interview, then walked away.

The election is scheduled for March.

Infantino is under pressure from outside organizations, such as UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation, to step down as president.

Infantino has tried to keep a low public profile since the scandal broke in July.

On Aug. 28, Infantino reportedly canceled an appearance and a speech at a dinner for the wealthy in Southampton, N.Y. The New York Post reported that Infantino did not attend after UEFA filed a lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan, N.Y. Infantino was scheduled to make an after-dinner speech at the Milken Hamptons Dialogues, two sources told the Post.

On July 28, Infantino took an end run around the FIFA Council and the entire organization when he introduced FIFA Forward Enterprise, which would have sold $20 billion in future World Cups to stakeholders.

It erupted into a worldwide scandal, but before he took it off the table, with severe global consequences.

On Friday morning, they put up a billboard in the crossroad of the world in Times Square in New York City, demanding that Infantino resign. The billboard is on the corner of 1500 Broadway and West 43rd St.

The billboard had two separate messages:

UEFA is seeking legal action against Infantino, while FIFA claims that Europe’s governing body has started a smear campaign against him.

Outside of Infantino resigning, this story is not going to go away any time soon.
