Things To Know As Nigeria Takes On Cameroon In WAFCON Quarter-Finals

Defending champions Nigeria will take on Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday.

The encounter is scheduled for 6pm local time (5pm GMT).

The match will determine one of the semi-finalists and an automatic qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Head to Head

Sunday’s encounter will be the 14th meeting between Cameroon and Nigeria at the WAFCON finals, making it the most-played fixture in the history of the tournament.

Nigeria have dominated the previous 13 meetings, recording nine wins in regulation time and two victories on penalties.

Cameroon have won once, while one encounter ended in a draw without a penalty shoot-out.

The two sides have faced each other at every stage of the competition, including the group stage, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place play-off and final.

Their only previous quarter-final meeting came in 2022, when Nigeria secured a 1-0 victory through Rasheedat Ajibade’s 56th-minute goal.

Nigeria have also won all three WAFCON finals contested against Cameroon, defeating them 5-0 in 2004, 2-0 in 2014 and 1-0 in 2016.

Cameroon’s only WAFCON victory over the Super Falcons came in the 2012 third-place play-off, when they prevailed 1-0.

Nigeria have scored nine goals at the ongoing tournament, compared with Cameroon’s four.

However, the Super Falcons have conceded five goals, their highest tally at a single WAFCON edition.

The Super Falcons are unbeaten at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, where they recorded four wins and one draw in five matches during the previous edition.

Nigeria are aiming for a record-extending 10th appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, having featured in every edition since the inaugural tournament in 1991.

The defending champions are also chasing a 14th WAFCON semi-final appearance and have progressed beyond the group stage at all 14 centralised editions of the competition.

Nigeria have won both of their previous WAFCON quarter-finals, defeating Cameroon 1-0 in 2022 and Zambia 5-0 at the last edition.

They are yet to concede in a WAFCON quarter-final, scoring six goals without reply in their two previous appearances at this stage.

Cameroon team information

Cameroon have played all three of their matches at the ongoing tournament in Casablanca, beating Mali 2-1 and drawing 1-1 with Cabo Verde at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium.

The Indomitable Lionesses are targeting a third FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance, having previously featured at the 2015 and 2019 editions.

They have reached the knockout stage in 12 of their 13 appearances at the centralised WAFCON finals, with their only group-stage exit coming in 2000.

Cameroon have suffered just one defeat in their last 12 WAFCON matches in regulation time, a 1-0 loss to Nigeria in the 2022 quarter-finals.

Victory on Sunday would send Cameroon into their 11th WAFCON semi-final.

The winner of the quarter-final will progress to the semi-finals and secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
