The UAE calls on the Security Council to expand the arms embargo on Sudan

Abu Dhabi – The United Arab Emirates called on the UN Security Council on Saturday to expand the arms embargo to cover all of Sudan and apply it to all warring parties and the networks that supply them.

The UAE’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York said in a statement: “The UAE takes note of the Security Council’s decision to extend the sanctions regime on Sudan for one month. 

The Council must use this period to reach an agreement on meaningful measures that address the realities of the conflict and contribute to ending it.”

The statement added: “The UAE urges the Security Council to expand the arms embargo to cover all of Sudan and apply it to all warring parties and the networks that supply them.”

The Mission explained that “such a measure would help reduce the flow of weapons to the warring parties, protect civilians, and support efforts to end the conflict.”

The statement noted that Sudan is suffering one of the world’s most devastating humanitarian crises, stressing the need for urgent international action to compel the warring parties and their affiliated militias to end hostilities and ensure safe, rapid, and unhindered humanitarian access.

The UAE reiterated its commitment to working closely with its partners in the Quartet and supporting the efforts of the Quintet and other international and regional partners to support a political solution that ends this civil war.

The mission reaffirmed that there is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan, adding that the only viable path to lasting peace is an independent, civilian-led transition, free from the influence of warring parties and extremist groups.
