The FE – 340 irregular Bangladeshi migrants return from Libya
As many as 340 irregular Bangladeshi migrants returned home on Friday from Libya with most of them illegally crossing the sea to enter Europe.
They were brought back to the country from the Libyan capital Tripoli by Fly Oya International flights, said the foreign ministry in a statement.
Their voluntary repatriation was completed through the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment in cooperation with the Libyan government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Most of these repatriated Bangladeshis are known to have entered Libya with the instigation and cooperation of human traffickers with the aim of illegally traveling to Europe by sea, reads the statement.
Many of them are reported to have been abducted and tortured in Libya at different times.
Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministries concerned and the International Organization for Migration received the repatriated Bangladeshi citizens at the airport in Dhaka.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the returnees to share their harrowing experience with everyone to increase public awareness.
IOM provided travel expenses, some food, first aid and temporary accommodation to each repatriated person in the voluntary return.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and the International Organization for Migration are working together to ensure the safe repatriation of Bangladeshi citizens detained in various detention centers in Libya, said the statement.
