The Communist Party of China has called for unity around Xi Jinping
The Institute of Party History and Literature of the Communist Party of China called for support for Xi Jinping’s leadership, drawing on the political legacy of former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin. The article was published by the People’s Daily as part of events marking the 100th anniversary of Jiang’s birth, according to the South China Morning Post.
The authors of the article noted that during Jiang Zemin’s tenure, China responded to international events related to the country’s sovereignty and security, and overcame political, economic, and natural challenges. They emphasized the need to uphold the authority and leadership of the Party’s Central Committee, headed by Xi Jinping.
The article also called for accelerating efforts to achieve technological self-reliance. According to the SCMP, the coming years could be crucial for Beijing’s efforts to strengthen its position in the global high-tech supply chain and gain an advantage over the United States.

The campaign to honor Jiang Zemin includes a 12-part television documentary, the issuance of commemorative postage stamps, a symposium on his views on defense, and a gathering in Beijing on his birthday, where Xi Jinping is scheduled to speak. Jiang Zemin died in 2022 at the age of 96.
The call for unity came ahead of an important party meeting in October and next year’s Chinese Communist Party Congress, during which the leadership is likely to undergo a major reshuffle. The article also called on officials to improve their ability to anticipate, assess, and respond to geopolitical challenges. The commentary specifically highlighted Jiang Zemin’s focus on party governance, linking it to Xi Jinping’s campaign against corruption and for strengthening party discipline.
At the same time, China is facing high youth unemployment and weak consumer confidence. Beijing is also engaged in a strategic rivalry with Washington that spans trade tariffs, regional security, and cutting-edge technologies.
