Tayla Kavanagh Breaks 15 Minutes to Storm to 5000m PB in Games Debut
Tayla Kavanagh crowned her Commonwealth Games debut with a stunning personal best, clocking 14:58.49 for eighth place in the women’s 5000m final at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland on Thursday, 30 July 2026.
Racing in her first Games after a breakthrough road season, Kavanagh broke 15 minutes as Australia’s Rose Davies led an Australian one-two in 14:44.53, and with her strongest distance regarded as the 10000m, the 24-lap personal best signals plenty still to come.
Across the city, the netballers’ semi-final dream died in agonising fashion as England fought back from six goals down to win their Pool A decider 58-54 at the OVO Hydro. Coach Jenny van Dyk’s side flew out of the blocks, feeding Elmere van der Berg relentlessly in a 17-11 first quarter, and still led 29-28 at halftime after England took the second 17-12.
The turning point came early in the third, when captain Khanyisa Chawane left the court with a head knock, Kamogelo Maseko coming on as Karla Pretorius and Jamie Golob shared the armband.

Back at Scotstoun, Marione Fourie came within six hundredths of the podium in the 100m hurdles final. Third fastest through the morning heats in 12.50, she crossed fourth in 12.66, with Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan taking bronze in 12.60. “I’m very hard on myself and I’m going to use this to work even harder,” said Fourie. Marlie Viljoen’s 400m ended in the semi-finals in 52.99, and Karabo More ran a season’s best 4:37.97 in the mile heats without advancing.
On the greens, Bridgit Herselman beat the Isle of Man’s Carol Whitehead in straight sets to sit third in her section after three of five matches, and there was a coaching triumph for Sheryl James, whose sprinter Masala Makatu claimed T12 100m silver, South Africa’s first track and field medal of the Games.
The netballers regroup against Uganda at 5pm on Friday with fifth place still to play for. Also, two codes open their campaigns: Donné Breytenbach begins her judo challenge in the 57kg around midday, and S’annara Grove makes South Africa’s track cycling bow in the 10km scratch race final, in the early evening at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
