The story
Orlando Pirates and adidas South Africa have expanded the club’s off-pitch style offering by teaming up with visual artist Masonwabe Ntloko to create a pair of limited-edition silk scarves that fuse football, fashion and cultural storytelling.
The Eastern Cape-born designer, illustrator and founder of Create Studios revealed the collaboration on social media this week, describing it as one of the proudest moments of his creative career.
Known for producing artwork deeply inspired by his heritage and the lived experiences of township and village life, Ntloko has steadily built a reputation as one of South Africa’s most exciting young creatives.
His previous IQHAYIYA LOMANYANO collection celebrated the joy of street football through striking apparel, including a football jersey and anthem jacket inspired by a reimagined South African flag.
Now, the artist has brought that same storytelling approach to one of the country’s biggest football clubs.
Taking to Instagram, Ntloko announced his collaboration with Orlando Pirates and adidas, unveiling exclusive Home and Away silk scarves designed as part of the Buccaneers’ 2026/27 “Threaded in Gold” kit collection.
“I am honoured to announce that I have been chosen to design the official home and away limited edition silk scarves in collaboration with @OrlandoPirates and @adidasza for the Threaded in Gold 2026/27 kit collection,” he wrote.
Ntloko explained that the project was about far more than creating supporter merchandise, with each piece intended to tell the story of one of South Africa’s most iconic football clubs.
“Developed under the creative brief ‘Threaded in Gold,’ the scarves were designed to celebrate heritage, culture and the enduring spirit of the Buccaneers. To contribute to a collection that carries so much meaning for the club and its supporters is a privilege I do not take lightly.
“Each scarf was created as more than just a collectable. It is a piece of storytelling that honours the club’s legacy while capturing the pride, passion and identity that connects generations of Pirates supporters,” stated Ntloko.
The collaboration also highlights the growing relationship between football and contemporary South African design, with artists increasingly helping clubs express their identity beyond the pitch through fashion and culture.
Ntloko concluded by thanking everyone involved in bringing the project to life.
“Thank you to the @adidasza team, @OrlandoPirates team and the @IMA_SAfrica team for entrusting me with this opportunity. I am proud to have contributed to a collection that brings together football, design and culture in a meaningful way.”
The limited-edition scarves add another creative chapter to Pirates’ acclaimed “Threaded in Gold” collection, further cementing the club’s reputation for blending football heritage with South African art, fashion and culture.
