Takala urges Central Bank governor to remain in post

The Higher Council of State (HCS) President Mohamed Takala has urged Central Bank of Libya Governor Naji Issa to remain in office, after Issa asked to be relieved of his duties.

In a letter published by the council on Monday, Takala said Issa should continue his work to ensure the central bank operates without interruption and to help maintain financial and economic stability.

He also called on the governor to focus on controlling public spending and preventing abuses in the use of foreign currency while his request to resign is considered under constitutional and legal procedures.

Issa had said in two letters addressed to the president of the HCS and the speaker of the House of Representatives, both dated 9 August 2026 that he was unable to continue in his post, but did not give a reason, describing the matter as sensitive.

His decision came hours after the central bank announced it would resume publishing monthly revenue and expenditure data from September, including figures through the end of August.

The news was followed by a rise in foreign currency prices on Libya’s parallel market, with the US dollar reaching 10 dinars.
