Tajay Gayle among Jamaican podium finishers at Wanda Diamond League Final in Switzerland – IRIE FM

On a day when two world records were broken, Olympic bronze medallist Rajindra Campbell, former world champion Tajay Gayle, Olympic silver medallist Wayne Pinnock, and Ruschell Clayton were the Jamaican podium finishers.

This was at the 14th stop of the Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich, Switzerland, yesterday.

Campbell took second place with an effort measuring 22.22 metres in the men’s shot put event, as victory went to USA’s Jordan Geist with a personal best of 22.53 metres.

Gayle, the 2019 world champion, leapt a season’s best 8.43 metres, while Pinnock had a best effort of 8.33 metres, as the pair took the silver and bronze, respectively. The event was won by Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece, who won with 8.45 metres.

Clayton, who had already secured a place in the Diamond League season-ending final in September, stopped the clock at 53.17 seconds for third in the women’s 400 metres hurdles, behind winner Ann Cockrell, who posted a world-leading 52.14 seconds.

Meanwhile, Distin missed the podium after clearing the bar at a season-best 1.96 metres, with the gold going to Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers with 2.02 metres.

Olympic champion Julian Alfred won the women’s 100 metres in a new national record of 10.70 seconds for St. Lucia, while Jamaica’s Tina Clayton’s 10.98 seconds was only good enough for fourth. Her compatriots Bryana Lyston was sixth in 11.13 seconds, and Jonheile Smith was seventh in 11.14 seconds.

Bryan Levell had to settle for sixth place in the men’s 200 metres with 20.32 seconds, as American Kenny Bednarek won in a world-leading 19.62 seconds, while Commonwealth champion Navasky Anderson was seventh in the men’s 800 metres after crossing the line in 1 minute, 44.31 seconds.

Meanwhile, the 2022 world champion, Brazilian Alison dos Santos, stole the show in the men’s 400 metres hurdles, smashing the world record in 45.80 seconds and adding another unforgettable chapter to his rivalry with Karsten Warholm.

ussell followed with a world record of her own in the women’s 100 metres hurdles, clocking 12.09 seconds.

Jamaicans Danielle Williams, 12.56 seconds, and Ackera Nugent, 12.69 seconds, were fourth and fifth, respectively.
