TAAG Angola Airlines has successfully transported two adult lions from South Africa to Nigeria via Angola.
The lions, weighing approximately 200 kgs each, began their journey in Johannesburg, South Africa, where they were under the care and supervision of wildlife conservation specialists.
TAAG said the lions were transported aboard its Boeing 737-800 freighter, which stopped off at the cargo terminal at Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport in Luanda, Angola, before flying onwards to Lagos in Nigeria.
The airline said that the use of Dr. António as a transit hub underscores Luanda’s growing importance as a cargo gateway for the continent, enhancing links between southern, central, and west Africa and contributing to more efficient regional and international supply chains.
Extensive planning and dedicated handling procedures were implemented throughout the operation, including documentation, preparation, containment, and monitoring processes, said TAAG.
These measures ensured the animals’ safety and well-being while meeting international requirements governing the air transport of live animals.
The lions’ destination was a leading zoological facility in Lagos, where they are being cared for in a secure and controlled environment.
The facility provides specialised veterinary support, experienced big-cat handlers, and purpose-built conditions designed to ensure the animals’ welfare.
As part of its expanding African cargo network, TAAG Cargo currently operates dedicated services to Lagos, Brazzaville, Abidjan, Accra, Kinshasa, Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Lusaka.
