Banco BAI Leads With Trust, Access and Innovation in Angolan Banking – Perk Valley Now

Nearly 30 years ago, a group of Angolan entrepreneurs set out to create a major bank that was entirely owned, financed and operated by Angolans. That vision became Banco Angolano de Investimentos S.A., PLC, better known as Banco BAI.

Founded in Luanda in 1996 as Angola was rebuilding from conflict and its financial sector was changing, it is now one of the country’s leading financial institutions.

With approximately 5 trillion kwanzas in assets, close to 2,000 employees, around 1,000 service points and roughly 3 million clients, Banco BAI has grown alongside the country it was created to serve.

Its network stretches across Angola, including more than 1,000 branches, digital banking tools, payment services and financing solutions for both individuals and businesses.

As Angola works to expand financial inclusion, diversify its economy and modernize its financial system, Banco BAI’s strategy continues to reflect three recurring priorities: public trust, broader access and long-term investment in national development.

Those priorities are even more pressing in a country of 35 million people, half of whom are young adults. Access to banking influences how people receive wages, make payments, save, start businesses and participate in the economy.

As Banco BAI approaches its 30th anniversary, its primary goal is to serve every Angolan.

Raising Angola’s Market Standards

A defining moment in Banco BAI’s history happened in June 2022, when the bank went public on BODIVA, Angola’s stock exchange. The listing made Banco BAI the first company in the country to do so, turning it into a Public Liability Company.

Going public was a milestone not only for Banco BAI, but for Angola itself. It was also the country’s first-ever public market offering. For the first time,  one of the country’s largest banks was subject to the transparency and oversight that come with being listed on a stock exchange.

Before going public, Banco BAI went through a rigorous review of its governance, transparency protocols and financial reporting standards to meet the expectations of a public market listing. Investor demand also signaled confidence in the bank, with the offering attracting demand above the available supply.

For Angolans, the listing created a chance to own part of one of the country’s leading banks. For the financial market, it showed that a major domestic institution could operate with greater openness, accountability and public oversight.

Since going public, Banco BAI has continued to strengthen its commitment to transparency and public accountability. The organization follows strict internal policies and conducts daily checks in each department, along with regular reviews by teams that oversee risk, compliance and governance.

It also shares reports online so the public can see how the bank is managed and how it is performing.

Internally, the company uses systems that assess its financial strength and resilience, ensuring it has sufficient capital and liquidity to withstand unexpected conditions.

These efforts are paying off. In 2024, Banco BAI’s capital ratio was 24.2%, well above the 8% minimum and the 20.7% sector average.

Over the same period, loans that were at risk of default dropped from 18.6% in 2023 to 10.8% in 2024 and further to 7.7% by mid-2025, even though the bank’s total loans grew to about 1,404 billion kwanzas.

Banco BAI’s core values — Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Ethical Conduct and Customer Orientation (RIIEC) — guide its operations across the organization. It regularly communicates with international investors and public officials, helping connect the world to Angola’s financial opportunities.

Through careful lending, disciplined funding and open communication, the bank reinforces its commitment to trust, accountability and sustainable growth, setting a high standard for publicly traded companies in Angola.

Making Banking More Accessible in Angola

As one of the largest banks in Angola, Banco BAI understands that reaching people isn’t just about having branches. It’s also about digital access.

With around 1,000 branches and service points across the country, the bank reaches both cities and smaller communities. Yet for many Angolans, distance, cost and paperwork can make physical banking challenging, especially in rural areas.

To overcome these barriers, Banco BAI has developed a digital platform along with several agent banking services. At the center of this strategy is BAI Directo, the bank’s free mobile and web banking platform, supported by phone-based services.

Through BAI Directo, customers can access a range of banking services without needing to visit a branch. A growing network of local agents is bringing these services directly to communities beyond the major cities, reaching people who were previously underserved.

Internally, the company has adopted Office 365 cloud services to improve operational efficiency. A platform migration planned for 2027 will further enhance service quality, while future AI initiatives are expected to create more personalized, accessible banking experiences.

Backing the Businesses Building Angola

Access alone does not lead to economic growth. Banks play a vital role in directing capital to businesses, entrepreneurs and productive sectors, and Banco BAI is helping lead the way.

From 2018 to 2022, the bank rose into the top three of the country’s banking sector and took first place in total deposits and total assets. It has remained a market leader in both areas since then.

Gross credit volume reached 952 billion kwanzas, nearly doubling over 10 years. About 68% of that went to companies and 32% to households. Corporate lending grew 45% between 2020 and 2024.

Credit to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises totaled 173.5 billion kwanzas in 2024, representing 28% of the total loan portfolio and more than triple the level in 2020.

The bank’s credit portfolio is spread across many parts of the economy. Services account for 13%, agribusiness 11%, extractive industries 10%, trade 9%, manufacturing 8%, construction 6% and other sectors 1%. It has also backed projects in agribusiness, bioenergy and industry.

Lending is only one way Banco BAI works with businesses. Startups can access payment and financing solutions, while large companies can use structured finance. The bank also provides payment cards, acquiring services, import letters of credit and payroll solutions.

For many companies, these services are integral to daily operations.

Investing in Employees and Communities

Through the BAI Academy, Banco BAI invests heavily in its people, providing training and career growth opportunities. Between 2013 and 2024, it ran 2,331 training initiatives, totaling over 1 million hours of learning.

The organization emphasizes fair, merit-based promotions and gender equality in leadership, ensuring all employees have equal opportunities to advance within the organization. It also provides health, wellness and employee financing benefits that support staff and their families.

Banco BAI also gives back to the communities it serves through Fundação BAI, which focuses on education, health, culture and social development.

In 2024 alone, the foundation supported 34 initiatives across 11 provinces, reaching more than 200,000 people through scholarships, libraries, health campaigns, heritage preservation, technical training and sports infrastructure rehabilitation.

The bank’s efforts have earned it multiple “Best Bank in Angola” awards from international publications, including Euromoney, The Banker and Global Finance.

A New Focus on Climate and Sustainable Growth

Since 2023, sustainability has become an increasingly important focus for Banco Angolano de Investimentos.

More recently, it established a dedicated Sustainability Office known as GST and approved a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy. It also launched the Executive Sustainability Program (PEST) to embed environmental and social priorities across its operations.

In 2025, Banco BAI published its first Sustainability Report and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The agreement focuses on developing sustainable finance tools, including green bonds, and improving climate finance capacity.

That same year, it became the first Angolan company to join the Africa Business Leaders Coalition, solidifying its role in sustainable finance both nationally and regionally.

Forging the Future of Banking in Angola

Banco BAI measures success through more than financial performance. While the bank continues to prioritize stability, disciplined risk management and long-term shareholder value, it also evaluates its impact through customer satisfaction, financial inclusion and its contribution to Angola’s economic development.

Customer experience is monitored through daily Net Promoter Score (NPS) reporting and independent market surveys, helping ensure that millions of clients receive reliable, accessible and increasingly digital banking services.

As its 30th anniversary gets closer, Banco BAI is investing in the digital infrastructure, institutional capacity and technology needed to expand access to banking across Angola. At the same time, it intends to keep financing the real economy, supporting entrepreneurs and directing capital toward sustainable growth.

Nearly three decades after its founding, Banco Angolano de Investimentos remains guided by the vision that inspired its creation: building a strong national bank capable of supporting Angola’s development.

Through its focus on accountability, financial access, business financing, community investment and sustainability, Banco BAI has grown into more than one of Angola’s leading financial institutions. It has become a long-term partner in the country’s growth and an organization helping shape its future.
