Mamelodi Sundowns’ status as African champions has opened another potentially lucrative chapter for the club, with the Brazilians set to enter the FIFA Intercontinental Cup with more than global prestige at stake.

However, while the financial rewards appear substantial, FIFA has yet to confirm the official 2026 prize-money structure.

The projections outlined below are based on the 2025 edition’s prize distribution, which provides the most recent reference point for what could be available to Sundowns this year.

Sundowns will face AFC Champions League Elite winners Al Ahli in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup on 19 September in Pretoria, after the Saudi Arabian side defeated Auckland FC 1-0 in the opening play-off on 26 August. The winner will advance to the FIFA Challenger Cup, where a place in the Intercontinental Cup final will be at stake.

For Sundowns, the opportunity is significant because the Intercontinental Cup has already demonstrated that there is substantial money available for clubs that progress through the competition.

The 2026 edition is the third staging of FIFA’s revamped annual global club competition. It replaced the annual FIFA Club World Cup, while the latter was transformed into the 32-team tournament held every four years, with Chelsea winning the inaugural expanded edition in 2025. FIFA’s Intercontinental Cup now brings together the champions of the six confederations.

The 2025 Numbers

The 2025 Intercontinental Cup carried a reported prize structure of:

• US$5 million (R80 million) for the champions
• US$4 million (R64 million) for the runners-up
• US$2 million (R32 million) for the team eliminated in the Challenger Cup
• US$1 million (R16 million) for the team eliminated in the Derby of the Americas

That meant a club’s earnings increased substantially depending on how far it progressed.

The important point for Sundowns is that they do not enter at the same stage as the UEFA Champions League winners. European champions Paris Saint-Germain, for example, went straight into the 2025 final, while the other continental champions had to navigate the earlier rounds. PSG ultimately won the tournament and collected US$5 million (R80 million).
