The competition features three groups of three teams each:
Group A: Hosts Tanzania, Ethiopia and Rwanda
Group B: Uganda, Sudan and Djibouti
Group C: South Sudan, Kenya and Burundi
Hippos head coach Laryea Kingston, a former Ghana international, expressed confidence in his team’s progress while noting areas that still require refinement as they implement a new tactical identity.
“This week, we’re going to work on the coaching itself, the identity, the way we want them to play. We started this morning. I think it went well.
But there is more room for improvement. Some of them find it difficult to repeat the same situations,” Kingston said regarding the team’s build-up play.
He added that building consistency remains a top priority during the final stages of camp. “The consistency in the build-up wasn’t there.
But going forward, I think if we repeat the sessions again, I think they can pick it. But overall, I think they are on the right track.”
Stakes are extremely high for participating nations, as the top two teams from the zonal qualifiers in Tanzania will earn the right to represent the CECAFA zone at the TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa of Nations.
With kick-off approaching, the Hippos are aiming to perfect their tactical game plan to navigate Group B and finish in the top two.
