Sumood Alliance Urges UN to Expand Arms Embargo Across Sudan

Khartoum, Sudan – The Civil Democratic Alliance of Revolutionary Forces (“Sumood”) has called on the United Nations Security Council to expand the arms embargo currently enforced in Darfur to encompass the entire territory of Sudan, citing the widening scale of military operations across the country.

Calls for Nationwide Arms Restrictions and Accountability

In a statement issued on Friday, the alliance emphasized that the armed conflict is no longer confined to a single province, urging the Security Council to impose targeted sanctions on all actors supplying military hardware to warring factions. Sumood highlighted that the continued inflow of weaponry exacerbates civilian suffering and prolongs the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.

Furthermore, Sumood endorsed the recommendations of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan, urging member states of the UN Human Rights Council to renew the mission’s mandate and ensure adequate resourcing for its investigations into human rights violations and civilian protection mechanisms.

Ultimately, Sumood’s petition arrives as the UN Security Council evaluates diplomatic measures to curb the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The coalition reiterated that sustainable peace hinges on halting weapon flows, protecting non-combatants, and advancing legal accountability frameworks in coordination with the International Criminal Court.
